*MOM SENT TO JAIL.............

10-25-99

Ms. Rita Garcia, Mother of three, was  sent to jail for 50 days, for not making sure her children attended school. Her children ages 8, 9, and 10, missed roughly one-third of last year's school days. She said it was because they had head lice,  school officials said she ignored numerous efforts to resolve their truancy.

"The school went to enormous lengths to provide her with ointments and treatment," said Deputy District Attorney Lois Baer. "That was her primary reason, but she was simply not getting them to school."
Santa Clara Superior Court Judge Thang Nguyen Barrett ordered Ms. Garcia to do time for contributing to the delinquency of minors.
In California, all children from ages 6 to 16 are required by law to attend school. Garcia's children are to stay with family members while their mother serves out her sentence.

*FATHER SENT TO JAIL FOR YELLING............
A father in California dropped off his teenage daughter at school last week, she, filled with the attitude only a teenager in America can have, refused to walk into school and in fact, walked the other way. The father became understandably upset and started yelling at her to go back to school, she continued to refuse,  so after several minutes of mutual shouting - he gave up and went into the school to tell them about his daughter' s situation. When he appeared at school the police were waiting for him. Why? Because he yelled at his daughter  outside the school.

POOR Magazine sees these as unfair punitive measures against the parents, which we have seen as an ongoing trend in a series anti-parent legislation. If you have any related stories of abuse of parents by Child Protective Services and/or other systems, please file it with POOR Magazine. Tiviana Lee, POOR Magazine
